Great Expansion to 2-player Catan My wife and I love Settlers of Catan, but we don’t always have 3-4 people to play. Rivals for Catan was the perfect way to scratch the itch. I was really impressed with the original rivals which came with 3 different theme sets, allowing for 5 distinct games (Base Game, Era of Gold, Era of Turmoil, Era of Progress). So I was naturally excited to get the first expansion, Age of Darkness. With 3 new theme sets (the Era of Intrigue, the Era of Merchant Princes, and the Era of Barbarians) the total of play options comes up to 8. Also, if a friend also has both the base game and the expansion, you can play tournament-style, with each player choosing the cards they want to play with. (Those rules are on the catan website.)One nice addition to the cards is a second tab that spells out exactly where the card can be placed, for individuals who may be color blind or who may just forget what the colors stand for. Longtime Catan fan. This is a great expansion to a 2 player game. Short on players? Pick up Rivals for Catan and begin building with just one person. Beginning rules are easy to follow and as you play more each expansion falls nicely into place. Happy gaming!
